The Health Quality and Safety Commission’s Open for Leadership Awards are given out monthly to DHBs around the country – two a month from February to November.
Each month two DHBs are asked to put forward one candidate in the first five years of their career or clinical practice, who has shown clear emerging leadership qualities and made a difference to patient care.
Six nominations were received by the Hauora Tairawhiti Board. One of the nominees will receive an Open for Leadership Award trophy, funding for training of their choice and national recognition.
One of Hauora Tairāwhiti’s nominees is profiled below.
Leading by example has earned Surinderpal Sran a nomination for the Health Quality and Safety Committee Open for Leadership Award.
For Dunblane Rest Home and Village Clinical Leader, Registered Nurse Surinderpal, the HQSC award nomination has yet to sink in.
"I am excited to be in this role and I still have many plans for future tasks. It feels wonderful to be here," she says.
"To be working as a leader and then be nominated for this award - I feel like I'm dreaming, thank you."
Surinderpal was nominated by Dunblane Business and Care Manager Amanda Davis.
“I am very pleased with the adaption of knowledge she presents to the delivery of residents’ care, as well as the mentoring of the registered staff she supervises,” says Amanda.
"She has really client focused ideas and is driving the nurses to better their clinical assessments, and better critically asses the residents' care and health needs.
"I see her interactions with the nurses and her team members, and everyday she is leading them by example."
Surinderpal is also studying a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Science with a focus on leadership, management and quality of health care.
