2017 Nurses and Midwives of Tairāwhiti Awards

10 May 2017

The achievements and dedication of Nurses and Midwives were celebrated last Saturday at the Nurses and Midwives of Tairāwhiti (NAMOT) annual awards.

Nine awards were presented to nurses and midwives who are going above and beyond to provide the best care to those who need them. They share this determination with another group of Tairāwhiti women, those who left the district to serve in World War One. Their story was a theme throughout the evening.

Excerpts of the playwright and nurse, Jackie Davis’s WW One themed play ‘A Time Like This’, was performed by Mike Costello and Myles Ashworth. Kay Morris Mathews, the author of a book about local nurses who served, was the guest speaker for the evening. Kay shared stories about the exploits of an intrepid group of nurses and midwives who left Tairāwhiti during World War One.

Hauora Tairāwhiti Chief Executive Jim Green attended the evening. “It was very humbling to hear how they cared for the wounded in far-flung countries half way around the world. The stories of those women were of courage, determination, a sense of duty, innovation and above all, caring. They had a significant impact and many of them continued that when they came home and carried on their careers.”

“Fast forward 100 years to 2017 and we can see many of today’s midwives and nurses displaying similar attributes. Our modern day award nominees may not be far from home or in a totally different environment, but they are right up there for ensuring people in Tairāwhiti get exemplary care, and not just today, looking forward to what can be improved for the future.”
